LA MAJA & EVOCATIVE RECOLLECTIONS


In this installation, the artist Gretta Sarfaty shows photographic records of two performances, La Maja (1981) and Evocative Recollections (1985). In one big frame, fourteen black and white photos of Evocative Recollections showing a mattress on the floor and surrounded by a translucent lacy veil that reveals the artist inside, she is naked and plays with a black cat – a symbol of femininity. In another frame, eighteen photos taken during La Maja, an enactment based on the paintings La Maja vestida and La Maja desnuda by Francisco de Goya, Sarfaty plays the role of Maja and other actresses and actors complete the theatrical environment of the performance. Between the two frames, a TV shows a color video record of La Maja and Evocative Recollections in alternate repetitions.
