LA MAJA - GOYA TIME 1985
LA MAJA continues my ongoing exploration of the Self-Portrait; TRANSFORMATIONS, A WOMAN’S DIARY, EVOCATIVE RECOLLECTIONS, and METAMORPHIC RECOLLECTIONS, (1976 – 1984) in which I use my own body to create the actual work. The subject is the woman who has broken away from being imprisoned behind the traditional images of female beauty and perfection. LA MAJA expands this concept into the arena – the socio-political context. In the work, LA MAJA (me), destroys the image of herself in protest against the Inquisition-like destruction
of other Artists, with a rage both impassioned and complex. The event involved the participation of the audience. Curated by Gretta Sarfaty, Sandro Dernini and Butch Morris, RT Livingston composed the music and performed the organ for the Chapel section, choreographyby Gloria McLean, performed by Life Dance.
